Friday, September 21. 2007Thesis MeetingI met with Prof. Woglom today to further discuss my thesis and narrow down the topic area. We are planning to read the paper this weekend and to meet again Monday to talk about it. I'm excited to hear what Woglom's response will be, since he seems to be a proponent of EMH. In any case, I plan to bring my A-game once I recover from this hellishly busy week. Also, as I was just surfing the web, I came across these AMH-related blog entries that I found to be pretty interesting. The links are ranked in order of usefulness.

Rational models have trouble explaining all of the behavior we see in financial markets. Five themes of research in Behavioral Finance:
From this reading, I have noticed that two important factors that affect long-term investment returns are time horizons and financial constraints (you may remember these were mentioned as limits to arbitrage). I do not believe that these two factors are taken into much consideration in the Efficient Markets Hypothesis, and I want to look into what the EMH response is. Also, I plan to read all three of the papers listed under theories of overreaction and underreaction this upcoming week. I learned a couple of tips on how to research Economics literature from the social sciences librarian here at school. An overview of what tools are available can be found here: http://www.amherst.edu/library/research/courserelated/fall07/econ77.html A couple resources that I found to be useful:
I will be post specific articles that I looked at when I get a chance. Also, I have formed a small group with Mee Sun Song and Travis Scholes. We all have topics somewhat related to finance, and I'm looking forward to working with them as we critique each other's work. I handed him a copy of the paper I had written last semester for Institutional Economics about alternative views on the efficiency of markets. The paper serves as an overview of Adaptive Markets Hypothesis and this game theory model of stock markets called the Sante Fe Institute Artificial Stock Market. After quickly reading over it, Woglom suggested that I do some reading about Behavioral Finance. My plans for this weekend include:
Friday, August 24. 2007Web 2.0 in Plain EnglishI wanted to share this series of short informational videos that explains a lot of the newer technologies in Web 2.0 including Social Bookmarking, Social Networking, RSS, and Wikis. I found these videos to be very concise and colorful. The video below is a clip about the advantages of using the Social Networking on the web. The other clips can be found here: Social NetworkingFriday, August 24. 2007Announcement: Sprint Treo 700wx Update 1.15 Released! If you're one of the thousands of Sprint Treo 700wx users who have been waiting for Palm to enable stereo Bluetooth and USB or Bluetooth wireless internet tethering, then your wait is over! This official update has garnered surprisingly little publicity outside of a small circle of Treo enthusiasts over at TreoCentral. I started a thread there to start some discussion on comments or concerns regarding this latest update from Palm. A summary of my findings can be found at the end of this post. According to Palm's website, this update features:
In addition, you must meet the following requirements:
As always with these Palm updates, please proceed with caution. Although a hard-reset is not required, always backup your phone first. Beware that a few early adopters have run into a couple very minor issues. Here are a few observations from several users who have already made the update:
If you are looking for a safer bet that enables A2DP and DUN and is likely to give you fewer complications, then go here to download hannip's unofficial A2DP hack (this also allows Bluetooth DUN). Please note that if you already have this hack installed and you have decided to go ahead with the official Palm update, then you MUST uninstall the hack first! Further instructions can be found here. In other news, this update all but guarantees that Palm will not release a Windows Mobile 6 (WM6) update for the Palm Treo 700wx. So all in all, this is not great news, but it pretty much falls in line with what you've come to expect from Palm lately. At least it will give you some incentive to buy a new phone earlier rather than later. |
